Noy Jopson

Dad, Triathlete and Coach

A triathlete since he was 15, Noy was part of the first ever Philippine National Triathlon team and won the Philippines’ first international Triathlon medal, bagging the bronze medal for Junior Boys division in the inaugural ITU-ASTC Asian Triathlon Championships in Hasaki, Japan in 1992. A 3-time Olympic Distance National Champion as well as a 3-time Junior National Champion, Noy also won the Asian Cup Junior Title, emerging as the top-ranked triathlete under18 throughout the Asia Cup Series in 1995. A trip to Perth Australia, for the ITU World Championships in 1997 brought the curtain down to his stint for the Philippine National Team with a then best world ranking of 120th.

Noy met Amale in a charity fun run in their University, and the couple settled down in Amale’s hometown of Cebu where they tried their best to encourage their kids’ Mikele and Rafa, to have a healthy and active outdoor triathlon lifestyle. Shortly after moving to Cebu, Noy couldn’t resist the challenge of long-distance racing, contesting first two IM distance events to be held in the Philippines’ where he battled 3 flat tires and lost a 20min lead on the bike to finish 2nd in the 2002 Philippine IM-Distance, before dominating with a wire-to-wire victory enroute to becoming the Subaru Forrester Enduraman Champion in 2003.

Long-distance racing took a hiatus in the Philippines and so did Noy, but then the racing bug hit again with the introduction of the first Ironman-branded event in 2009. Noy won the Filipino Elite Category at the first ever Cobra Ironman 70.3 Philippines, as well as finishing top 8 overall, becoming the first Filipino Ironman 70.3 Champion. Qualifying for a trip to Clearwater, Florida for the 70.3 World Championships later that year, Noy produced a National 70.3 Record that would stand for 6 years. This was followed by two other podiums in the Philippines IM70.3 the last of which earned Noy a ticket to Kona where he completed the Ironman World Championships in 2012.

Discovering mountain biking and Xterra shortly after gave Noy renewed excitement and a new challenge within the sport. Noy raced to a podium in the Cebu Xterra in 2013, earning him a ticket to Maui where Philippine Xterra Presentor Vaseline Men asked him to lead and coach a Filipino contingent to what became Noy’s 4th World Championships (ITU Perth, 70.3 Clearwater, IM Kona, Xterra.)

A certified Spinning as well as Group Exercise Instructor, Noy started coaching shortly after winning his Filipino Elite 70.3 Title in 2009. Drawing on 30 years of multi-sport experience, he has helped numerous athletes from beginners to top age groupers and celebrities to successfully achieve their athletic goals while maintaining balance in other areas that are equally important to them. After recently moving to the Sacramento area, Noy has been finding his greatest joy in the sport to be in seeing Mikele and Rafa develop to their fullest potential as scholar-athletes and looks forward to seeing other kids enjoy and succeed in triathlon as well.
